If you are a Christian parent, I know how important it is for you to raise your kids with the Biblical virtues and values we honor in following Christ. As our kids get older and begin to expand their world beyond our reach and control, we can only pray that when they are on their own, they are upholding the Christian principles we teach and practice in our homes.
During the teenage years, we must prepare our kids for independence and slowly start letting go. At this stage in the parenting game, it is nearly impossible to monitor their every move and supervise every choice they make. We need to help our kids develop the ability to make godly decisions when it comes to all the options and challenges they face.
Christian parents want to help their kids build a strong foundation of faith to ensure they truly understand what it means to follow Jesus.
And while we are raising our kids to understand how to follow Jesus in real life, we also must address the other world they live in- the vast and sometimes precarious online world.
Most teens have their own iPhones and we all worry about the choices our kids make when it comes to what they do, who they follow, where they go, and what they see in the seemingly limitless digital world they now have access to.
How can we help them apply all the Biblical values to their activity online?
How can we be assured they will honor their faith in who they follow and what they share on social media?
How can we trust that they will make safe decisions when they are surfing the web?
How can we teach our teens what it means to truly follow Jesus every time their fingers touch those screens?
We can monitor their phones as best we can, but I believe that if our kids can develop an intimate relationship with Jesus, they will be strengthened with confidence, courage, and godly discernment when it comes to the choices they make online. If we can help build their faith and equip them with practical Christian guidelines, our kids will grow to have the spiritual maturity they need to make good decisions on their phones.
I’ve been running a teen ministry for several years, and I’ve learned that many of our teens today don’t have the full knowledge of the Christian faith, nor do they understand the gift of salvation and what that truly means for them personally.
